The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) was established in 2007 to “to expedite innovation and commercialization in the area of cancer research and to enhance access to evidence-based prevention programs and services throughout the state. CPRIT accepts applications and awards grants for a wide variety of cancer-related research and for the delivery of cancer prevention programs and services by public and private entities located in Texas.”
CPRIT has awarded over $670 million in grants to Texas-based cancer research and prevention projects and programs, including over $36 million to Texas A&M University System members.
The CPRIT Oversight committee has recently adopted a rule that requires grant recipients to certify that they have established tobacco-free policies as a condition of receiving CPRIT funding. This new policy requires that all CPRIT grantees be in compliance by August 31, 2012.
Texas A&M currently has a policy and University Rule that addresses Smoking and Tobacco Use; however, these guidelines only define areas that are to be smoke-free/tobacco-free, they do not prohibit their use on campus. In order to ensure future CPRIT funding, Texas A&M will need to consider an enhancement in tobacco policies to remain eligible.
